Melody Maker was one of the first, introducing itself in 1926 (around the same time that the first electric guitars and amplifiers began to emerge) and targeting musicians. However, as music became more and more popular the music magazines of the day began to target the general public and the introduction of new, rival magazines hit the shelves.

The 1950s is when the real battle started with Melody Maker going head to head with the new kids in town, the NME, an amalgamation of previous titles Musical Express and Accordion Weekly by new owner and music promoter Maurice Kinn. Previously more interested in jazz, Melody Maker was a late convert to the advent of rock and roll, but as the sixties swung in favour of bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, the ground was set for big readership figures for both publications.

New Music

The 1960s also saw the coming of more politicised voices to the publication of music news with the launch of the Berkley Barb in 1965 and Rolling Stone in 1967. Criticism of the Vietnamese war, the publication of Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and the counterculture revolution of the 1960s sat next to The Beatles, Jimmy Hendrix and Jim Morrison cover stories.

This political edge to music publication didn't reach the British music news until the late 1970s with the dawning of the age of punk. However, the early 70s saw the introduction of a new rival, Sounds, which quickly became one of the three music weekly magazines to generate good levels of readership. It's edge came from its ability to see the credibility of new musical movements like Punk early on.

The 1980s would see a mixed bag of journalism in the music industry, with the hip-hop wars affecting the NME and a more populist standpoint reigning at Melody Maker until its intellectual renaissance in 1986. However, it would be the 90s that would see the story of modern British music journalism come to a head. The rise of Britpop and the introduction & success of monthly magazines Q (1986) and Mojo (1993) left Melody Maker without a clear audience or direction, and so in 2000 is ceased publication, merging with its long time rival NME, while Sounds bit the dust nearly a decade earlier in 1991.

The 2000s were left to NME and despite its ropey start to the decade, it would eventually find its footing again with bands like White Stripes, The Strokes and The Libertines. However, with readership dropping fast to just over a tenth of its hey-day 300,000 circulation, publications like NME have pumped significant investment into their online music news to compensate.

With the arrival of a new decade, it's hard to say that any of the remaining music magazines are doing anything particularly trailblazing, but then neither is the music industry as a whole. With the nation locked into the X-Factor culture, genuinely credible new music often finds it difficult to break out of the underground world that it too often resides. The death of Top of the Pops in 2006 meant that the only music to be played on terrestrial television in the UK during prime time viewing was based around one talent contest or another. With circulation figures so low, maybe it's time for the icons of music news to take back what they have spent decades helping to create.
Music News - The Magazines That Shaped the Music Industry

10 Places to Distribute Your Music

Trying to promote your music by send out MP3's to the general public? In one of my other articles I gave you 10 ways to promote your music, in this article I give you the 10 of best places to distribute your music.

SoundCloud.com

Top 10 Music

SoundCloud is an amazing new website that's turning into one of the biggest community of music creators on the planet. You can upload, share and even embed the music on your website. The only downside is you can only upload 2 hours worth of music then you have to upgrade.

SoundClick.com

SoundClick started years ago and allows you to upload an unlimited amount of tracks for free, as-long as they are 128Kbps or under. You want to upload anything bigger then you need to purchase VIP membership. You can even sell your music through them, although I'm not sure that you will make any money.

Archive.org

For those of you who will not be making money from your music and wish to share your music for free permanently then this is a great option. You can release your music using creative commons licenses and link to them from your website and never have to worry about the cost of bandwidth.

Payloadz.com

Trying to make money from your music and want to use Paypal on your website? Payloadz allow you to sell your music using PayPal and they then distribute your tracks. You use the cart system on your own website without even having to know any scripting, just simply copy and paste any code they give you.

MySpace.com

Unless you have been living on another planet then you will have heard of this website, you get a band page and the ability to upload MP3's to it. Your music is then added to the MypSpace player on your profile and you can also choose whether to give the mp3 away for free.

TuneCore.com

A mp3 distribution website that sends your tracks to the likes of iTunes and Amazon to sell. It costs to set this up, but its much cheaper and more reliable than trying to do it yourself. Its also less time consuming as you are setting it all up from one website.

CDBaby.net

Similar to TuneCore and also distributes CD's of your music to shops in the US. A really good website for independent artists to sell music. Unfortunately you can only use one official distributor such as TuneCore or CDBaby as the websites that they distribute to will refuse your tracks if they already have them from somewhere else.

OOiZiT.com

OOiZit is a social network aimed at the unsigned artist and allows you to sell or give your music away for free. Also, if you sell music on OoiZit your music may be eligible for chart position in the UK Singles chart.

Netlabels

Online netlabels are a great place to share your free music, not only do you not have to worry about bandwidth, netlabels already have people visiting the websites to download music regularly. Music is hand picked by the netlabel owners so your music won't get lost among the hoards like it would on social networks. Check out Creative Commons Music Wiki and phlow.de/netlabels to find a netlabel that suits your style of music.

Revernation.com

Another huge global network for musicians, labels, management, fans and even venues. It provide all manner of tools and widgets to help in promoting your revernation page. Artists also get a portion of the advertising revenue as part of Reverbnations Fair Share program.
10 Places to Distribute Your Music

Top 10 Tips For Writing Hit Songs

1.) Keep a Journal/Diary

Whether you use an electronic gadget or a pen and notepad, record your thoughts, and ideas regularly. Ideas for song titles, lyrics, melodies, subject matters etc will pop into your head and you need to have a place to put them for future reference. Keep everything that you write and record because although you might not like the finished product there might be a line or two in a song that you can use in another song.

Top 10 Music

2.) Originality

The key to the attraction of sound is known to be distinction. There are many examples of artists with little talent enjoying far greater success than artists with an abundance of talent, Why? There are many reasons that you could cite but one of them will be that they have a sound that is instantly recognizable as being theirs. It is not a case of being better but of being distinctive. Furthermore do not take that too far; if you sound too wacky you will alienate your target audience. Distinction needs to be applied in a subtle fashion.

3.) The Craft of Songwriting

You need to study songwriting as you would engineering if you want to build a car or carpentry if you want to work with wood. Understand the nuances of writing not just what a verse and a chorus is. Are your verses in the right order? No. Really this is a common error. If there is a story, and I hope there is, the lyric needs to flow and make sense. The bridge isn't just there as a musical interlude it is there to give you an opportunity to evolve and develop your lyric. Don't try to be too clever with arrangements or you will lose the attention of your listener. The attention span of human beings in 2010 is shorter than ever.

4.) Listen

Listen to those that have had the hits and not just Lady Gaga, Metallica or Usher. Listen to the true greats of songwriting whose music has resonated over decades. There is a reason why those songs still get played and listened to 60, 50, 40, 30 years later. They are classic examples of how to capture the attention of the listener and keep it.....forever. The Bee Gees had hits in the '60's, '70's, '80's,'90's and '00's. That is a hell of a period of time to continually make music that people want to play. Mozart never struggled to come up with an ending did he? He never needed to fade out at the end of a piece of music. Have you listened to the '50's recordings of Sinatra or Elvis Presley. All recorded live, no overdubs and stunning. Why? How? Because they were genuinely talented and LISTENED.

5.) Focus

When writing your lyric maintain your focus on the subject matter. Don't meander and hope the listener happens to be on your wavelength. It has to be a lyric they can make sense of at 7am in the morning on the way to work without having to think about it too hard. The 7am test is important, If you can make someone listen to your song at that hour without wanting to kill you then you have a hit.

6.) Educate yourself

I once managed a Thrash metal band of 17 year old kids. We had a meeting at the guitarist's house one day and I looked through his record collection. He had Django Reinhardt, U2, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Public Enemy. I encouraged them to infuse their music with those influences. Within 12 months we had a deal with EMI. Broaden your musical horizons. You may surprise yourself.

7.) Words

Don't be afraid to let your stream of conscience flow. I know one songwriter that went out with his friends for a few drinks, came home and wrote a song in 10 minutes. The writer was a guy called Paul Weller, the song was called That's Entertainment. Go and Google it. It was a huge hit in Europe and is an iconic song over there. It is as he wrote it. No edit. Sometimes you just have to let it flow.

8.) Are you still a fan

Are you writing songs from a perspective other than that of being the same fan of music that you were when you started? If you are then quit and go and work in a bank. You need to have enthusiasm, an unquenchable thirst for music and knowledge and an excitement when you hear a new band that you love that takes you back to the day when you heard the first song that you fell in love with. Stay fresh, inspired and inquisitive. Always.

9.) Be curious.

I am not just talking about being curious with music. Be curious about books, movies, people, life, culture, other art forms, the list is endless and will drive your imagination and the development of your songwriting.

10.) Skill

If you are a writer of music or a writer of words and melodies there are two things that you need to remember. The first is do what you do every day and then do it again. And again. The second is that sometimes it is not what you play that matters or throwing loads of words in that show how clever you are. Sometimes you need to leave words out to let the melody do the work, drop a chord to leave the listener some aural space to let the lyric sink in.

To put it simply it is not what you play that matters sometimes it is what you don't play.
Top 10 Tips For Writing Hit Songs

Jack Johnson - To the Sea Album retell

What can I say, I love Jack Johnson. all the man touches turns to gold for me at least. So when I got the occasion to delineate his latest album entitled "to the sea" I leapt at it. Fans of Jack will know his type of songs are more at home being sung around a campfire and if you aren't into this mellow type of music then this album isn't going to turn the way you think about Jack Johnson or his music, however having said that if you are into this music then you are in for a real treat.

The Hawaiian resident has previously released 4 albums this manufacture it the fifth, however it is hard for me to pick a favourite album. To the sea is very similar to his old albums having said that some of the songs do have more meaningful lyrics and some come over a minute edgier and darker.

Latest Music

If you listen carefully you can pick out that a few things are troubling Mr Johnson and in one of his tracks titled "at or with me" Jack wishes population would say what they mean. This may not seem like a big deal to whatever however we have never seen whatever like this from the soft rocker so that in itself kind of makes these hard edged tracks a big deal.

Overall I love this album and urge fans of Jack Johnson to rush out and get it. Not that they will need any persuading that is.
Jack Johnson - To the Sea Album retell

How to Market a New Music Band

When you start out life as a new band it is important to get out of your garage or practise venue and introduce yourself to the wider public. If you are seeking to secure a record deal and aim for a successful music career as a recording artist being able to perform live to a high standard, book your own gigs and gain exposure is essential. Starting a band is tough and becoming a professional band is exceptionally difficult to achieve, but it is possible if you get certain aspects of the process right.

This article will assume that you have the talent, you have tracks of sufficient quality and you have the drive to succeed. Now let us focus on how to get known in your local area where you will hopefully begin making a name for yourselves.

New Music

1. No Gig Too Small

Most bands begin in pubs playing to a very small audience earning zero fee. You should go and meet gig venues and offer to play a gig and emphasise that you will promote it yourselves. An Email is simply not enough and more often than not you will get no reply. Visiting the venue shows that you are serious and this will secure you many bookings.

When you are starting out the experience of playing live, dealing with your PA system and getting the sound levels right for your performance is an essential part of being a reliable and quality live act. Pad out the audience with friends and family and take constructive feedback on your performance from the venue owners. Hopefully they will invite you back and tell their industry colleagues in other venues what a great idea it would be for them to book your band for a gig.

2. Learn basic PR

Common sense is the way forward in terms of your PR. Contact the local press and invite them to attend each gig but do not get too pushy with them as they get many invites of this nature. It may take some time and many requests before a reporter comes to your gig. Hopefully if you keep asking, eventually they may have a free evening and come along. At this point you must have the talent to impress them.

Send out well-written press releases to local music websites, magazines and local events portals with a high resolution photo they can use as a thumbnail or avatar for their listing or article. This makes it easy for them to create an article in a short amount of time which increases your chances of getting exposure.

Another good idea is to provide small leaflets for the venue in advance and ask them to distribute the leaflets to promote the event. It is in their interests to get customers into the venue so they will often be receptive to this type of promotion. Let the local youth club or youth organisation know you have a gig as young people love music and are often looking for things to do in the evenings.

3. Fully utilise the Internet

There are many social networks dedicated to music and you should have a webpage on all of them, particularly the larger ones. You should add photos, video, event information and connect with other users who will hopefully love your music and become your fans. Having these pages helps create a really professional feel for your band and make you look very established. Mailing lists are fantastic for getting the word out about a gig or a new music release. The social networks can store playable mp3s of your band performing and videos of your performances. Ensure that any media you use whether audio or video is good quality or you will make yourselves look like amateurs.

Do not fall into the trap of thinking you are better than you are. There are thousands of bands out there and plenty of options for a venue owner that you offend either by accident or on purpose. Remember the worlds biggest and best bands can get away with bad behaviour because they guarantee big money and are in high demand. The majority of bands are easily replaceable if they prove too difficult to work with!

Your success as a new band in the early days is about is getting your band known, and creating a good first impression. That will open some doors which will put you in a better position to hopefully landing that big break.
How to Market a New Music Band

How to Download Music to Zune

Zune players are considered new compared to iPods. As such, not much information is available about how to download music to Zune. But if you are already familiar with using MP3 players, then what you read here would be simple to grasp.

Anyone who owns an iPod would know how to download music to Zune quite easily. You would need computer software. For iPod, it is iTunes software but for Zune, you can use the Windows media player which should be a resident program if you are using Windows OS. There are essentially 3 ways to get hold of the Zune music downloads.

New Music

The first is of course to rip songs from CDs and download music to your Zune. Simply load the disc onto your ROM drive and then activate Windows media player. Click on your CD icon and you should see the songs available on the disc.

From there, just pick the tracks you like and mouse click the "Rip" button. The songs that are ripped would appear shortly in the library. Once it is done, connect your player to the computer via a USB cable. If the settings are properly configured between your player and the PC, synchronization should take place automatically and it would download the music to your Zune.

Even if the synchronization is incomplete, what you can do is manually copy and paste the music files onto your player. It is as easy as ABC. But when you rip the songs, remember to save them in the following formats WMA, MP3, WMV and MOV as these are compatible with your Zune. Other formats like RealMedia and DivX are not, so don't bother.

On top of ripping, there is another method to download music to Zune players. This is the common route which is to buy your songs from mainstream music stores like Zune marketplace, iTunes, Amazon and so on. Each song typically costs around .99 onwards.

There is a third option nowadays to download music to Zune players. It is quite new and revolutionary. For a flat fee, you can actually purchase a yearly or lifetime membership to paid services for unlimited Zune music downloads. There are more than a million songs and soundtracks to download. This alternative is becoming more popular among youngsters these days due to its affordability and constantly updated database.

Quite simply, these are all great ways to download music to Zune players. Why not pop over to my music blog and start transferring some nice cool songs onto your player?
How to Download Music to Zune

Texas Country Love Songs

Texas has a heart that's as big as the boundless horizon, and tends to wear that heart on its sleeve. No wonder when love hits a bumpy patch of road, you can hear its tires squeal on country music stations across the nation. Here's a list of some of the Lone Star State's greatest love songs with a country twist.

• Kenny Rogers, "Lady."-Written and produced by Lionel Richie, "Lady" was the first hit of the 1980's to top all four Billboard singles charts, country, adult contemporary, Top 100 and (yes) Black Singles. No other Texas artist has surpassed the long career of Houston-born Kenny Rogers. Rogers' album "The Gambler" remains one of the biggest selling country records of all time, and over a sixty year career Rogers is still recording and selling out concert venues.

Billboard Chart

• Lonestar, "Amazing."-"The smell of your skin... the taste of your kiss... the way you whisper in the dark..." How many girls turned up the radio and moved in closer to the boys they loved, driving down the back roads of East Texas (and all across the nation?) Texas transplants to Nashville, Lonestar originally called itself Texassee before opting for a name that reminded them more of their roots.

• Dixie Chicks, "Cowboy Take Me Away."-But the cowboy Martie McGuire, Emily Robison and Natalie Maines are singing about is not George W. Bush as the girls made very clear ten days before the 2003 Iraq invasion. "Just so you know," quipped Maines, "we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." The remark generated a huge controversy that led to a short-lived boycott of their records. The Grammies made up for that.

• George Strait, "The Man In Love With You."-"I never could work miracles.... There may be others who can do what I can't do..." Well, not when it comes to selling 58.5 million records, generating forty-four number one singles on the Billboard country chart and winning more Country Music Association awards than any other artist. Born in Poteet, Texas and raised on a cattle ranch, the practical-minded Strait also has a bachelor's degree in agriculture to fall back on in case he ever needs a day job.

• Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black, "When I Said I Do."-True, Black was born in New Jersey. But since he moved to Katy, Texas when he was less than a year old, his musical influences are strictly Lone Star. This Grammy-nominated duet with his wife is testament to one of the most enduring unions in country music.

• Waylon Jennings, "Amanda."-Jennings started his career as Buddy Holly's bass player, the guy who didn't make the plane the night the music died. In the 1970's, fed up with the way Nashville producers softened his sound, he retreated home to Austin to get his edge back, which earned him the label "outlaw." To this day Austin remains in many ways the Second City of Country music, rejecting the glitz and glamour of Nashville for a grittier, more authentic sound.

• Freddy Fender, "Before the Next Teardrop Falls."-Born to a circus family that wintered in Harlingen, the then Baldemar Huerta made his first guitar out of a sardine can and some screen door wire when he was five years old and taught himself to play. Some time later he changed his name to Freddy Fender, took the Tejano sound - a musical legacy of Texas' earliest Spanish settlers - and transmuted it into country music gold.

• Lyle Lovett, "She's Already Made Up Her Mind."-Word on the street - or at least on numerous Internet fan sites - is that this song is a reminiscence of the one-time Mrs. Lovett. However the album it appeared on came out a whole year before Lyle met the actress Julia Roberts. It is still a haunting, beautiful song.

• Willie Nelson, "Always On My Mind."-With his close pal and sometimes-musical collaborator Waylon Jennings, Nelson is better known as an "outlaw" than a romantic. But he has written a number of lyrical love songs. This is the sweetest.

• Townes Van Zandt, "Send Me Dead Flowers."-True, a bittersweet ode to a self-destructive girlfriend is not the stuff of mainstream romance. But then singer songwriter Van Zandt was not a mainstream kind of guy. Not everyone's convinced that this a country song but how can you doubt it when you hear it on a steel guitar? While the Rolling Stones' version may be the best known, The Cowboy Junkies did the definitive cover on their album named (of all things) Canada.
 Texas Country Love Songs

How To Have access To The newest Psp Games, Music And Movies

I have spent quite a lot of cash buying games for my Psp. First of all you will need a good camera with a good whole of mega pixels. I would recommend you to use at least 8mp or better. Right now I use a Samsung Varioplan witch has a 65x optical soon good for zooming in and out from long distances while I record. I'm not exactly sure why that would come in handy, but hey you never know. Homemade videos are inventive.

Record footage. Ok the next step is to go ahead and narrative some cool scenes that you want to use in your video. It helps to already have drawn out a basic idea of the video to help keep focused on the look you're going for. Shoot as many scenes as you like, the more the better. Trying seeing at some of you beloved music videos to get great ideas of separate types of camera angles.

Music Video

Video Editing. After you've recorded all the footage you want for your homemade video its time to edit. You do this by using a video editing software like pinnacle studios which you can buy from your local Best Buy or Fry's Electronics. Or if you're like me and you like things a diminutive bit more free you can use Windows Movie Maker on any computer installed with Windows Xp or a later version.

To find Windows Movie Maker on you computer just got to the Start menu>All Programs>Windows Movie Maker.

Ok after you've opened the video editing software of your selection load all of you video from you camera to your computer. Then from you computer drag them into the video editor. You should be able to trim clips out of the major shots you made for you homemade video already. Try to make the scenes look very dynamic. Born Charles Eugene Boone, in 1934, in Jacksonville, Florida, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee at the age of two. He is a direct descendant of frontiersman, Daniel Boone. He is also cousin to "Have Gun Will Travel" star, Richard Boone and to Randy Boone, star of the TV western, "The Virginian."

When Pat won on "Ted Mack's Amateur Hour" and "Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts", in 1954, his career took off. He first recorded with Republic Records in 1954 and then with Dot Records in 1955.

Billboard Chart

In 1955, Pat recorded a cover version of Fats Domino's "Ain't That A Shame" and it went to number one on the Billboard charts. Thanks to white artists like Pat Boone and Ricky Nelson covering R&B songs, many black artists not getting airplay on "white market" stations, were finally getting recognized.

While his music career was in full swing, Pat attended and graduated from New York's Columbia University in 1958. Between 1957 and 1960, he hosted his own TV show, "The Pat Boone Chevy Showroom" and he appeared in fifteen films.

A devout Christian, Pat turned down songs and film roles that could have compromised his religious standards, including a starring role in a film opposite Marilyn Monroe. Although, in the 1960's, Pat's marriage to Shirley Lee Foley, daughter of country music legend Red Foley, almost came to an end when he turned to drinking and partying. Shirley ended up leading him back to his Christian path.

On the charts, Pat had 38 songs on the Billboard Top 40 weekly charts between 1955 and 1962 and went to number one a total of six times. Here are Pat Boone's twenty biggest hits, according to Billboard's weekly Top 40 charts.

1. Don't Forbid Me - 1957 - the flip side "Anastasia" went Top 40 for Pat and was included in the film of the same title starring Ingrid Bergman.

6. Daughter Deborah (Debby) recorded solo in 1977 and had the number one song of that year, "You Light Up My Life" which went to number one on the Billboard singles chart for ten weeks. She won three Grammys that year, including Best New Artist of 1977.

Pat came under controversy in 1997, with his religious counterparts, when he recorded an album of "heavy metal" covers and appeared at the American Music Awards in black leather.

Pat and his family continue to record today and they released an album of R&B classics in 2006.
 Top 20 Pat Boone Hits

Best method to Get capability Music Downloads for Zune

You can get exclusive music downloads for Zune online straight through assorted sources on the web. This article's goal is to provide a real time report of the most profound change in the creation and delivery of recorded music in history. In many ways, more important than the invention of audio recording itself.

New Music

What is the change and what caused it?

Put simply, the tools and the ability to record professional quality songs and music is being taken from the hands of the few and put in the hands of many.

The Top 7 Reasons (So Far) That Home Recording Musicians Will Take Over Supplying Hip New Music to Hungry Listeners
Reason 1: The rapid improvement, increase in power, and increased affordability of home computers.
Reason 2: Rapid improvement and affordability of internet delivery speeds and bandwidth, causing the availability of high speed internet to more and more users.
Reason 3: Increased demand for high quality home studio equipment has encouraged more products and innovation. This competition has created a huge reduction in the cost of setting up a home studio.
Reason 4: Internet music file sharing has begun the death of the big recording labels' monopoly on music distribution.
Reason 5: The death of the unholy alliance between big recording labels and traditional radio, which previously succeeded in dictating style, genres and taste to more than a generation of music buyers.
Reason 6: The unprecedented exposure, via the internet, of fans and listeners around the world to every conceivable type of music is driving a vast demand for more and more varied, independent music.
Reason 7: The spreading realization among musicians and aspiring recording artists that recording professional quality songs and music at home is in fact possible, achievable and affordable

What Does the Future Hold for Home Recording Artists?

For those aspiring musicians and producers who understand, and also embrace and act on the possibilities and opportunities now available, the future of the music industry seems to belong to them.

Consider this:

The average home computer with even free recording software installed, possesses more power than the studios where most of the great records were recorded. This represents a massive opportunity for home recording artists to take control of their own fate. The increasing affordability of the home studio equipment available for today's home studio, make this even more true.

Recording Your Hip New Music - What it Takes to Get Professional Sound in the Home Recording Studio

It is now possible to achieve pro quality recording at home with very simple home recording equipment. Therefore, the tools of the trade are no longer an obstacle.

Making successful and confident sounding home recordings now comes down to the desire and determination of each aspiring recording artist or producer. In other words it is important to become familiar with the characteristics and needs of various sounds and the interaction of their frequencies.

When you know how to take control of how sounds behave together, the recording process becomes a series of quite simple and logical steps from the beginning of the recording to the final successful mix.

This does not mean that it is necessary to re-invent the wheel. Instead, seek a straightforward and simple guide to successful and professional home recording.

In other words, your music may be your unique creation, but the "craft" of recording is not. Before needlessly wasting months of trial and error, make the decision to accept the knowledge of those who are already achieving the results you desire from the home studio.

We Are Entering the Golden Age for Independent Music. Will You Be Ready?

The demand for independent and self-produced recordings has never been stronger. TV series, major and indie movies, web content, documentaries, advertising, CD compilations, and a host of other opportunities too long to list here, are all clamoring for hip new music to provide a fresh and original soundtrack for this explosion of new projects.

Indie and home studio musicians and songwriters are the captains of their own ships, whether they realize it or not. Those musicians who have the foresight to embrace the realities of the new music industry, will find little resistance in forging their path and making their mark.
Hip New Music - Why the Next Big Hit Could Come From a Simple Home Recording Studio

The most recent Music Download Reviews

The Maccabees - Walking In The Air

First of all, we would like to apologise for reviewing this a week late. Maybe a galvanic Banana spin would have caused this cracking cover version to hit the top spot instead of Matt Cardle? Probably not, but we shall sadly never know! Anyway, the lovely festive excellent (sung by Aled Jones - although, not in the actual film version) is given a brooding indie make-over by The Maccabees.

Latest Music

The south London five-piece recorded their version during a modern live recording session for On Track With Seat for Channel 4, which was on the telly on 8th December and received such a great response from fans that a Facebook campaign was launched to get it released...and here it is. Now, you probably surmise that Orlando Weeks vocals are not as strong as Mr Aled Jones. Well, you are right, but he uses his moody voice perfectly to create an atmospheric triumph. Brilliant!

Rated 4 out of 5

Mono - problem On The Way

Do you remember when Kings of Leon were 60% band and 40% moustache? Yeah? They were pretty great weren't they? These boys are from the same neck of the woods (Nashville) as their older homies and offer a pretty good exchange for the thoughprovoking and raw 2003-era KoL stuff that has gone missing from the Followill's own music since they started experimenting with Gillette products.

They've got that (classic rock) southern rock sound that made KoL so popular when they first broke out, but also (singer and Joe Strummer lookalike) Nick Brown's vocals sound uncannily like Caleb Followill, which makes it approximately impossible to see a Mono spin over the next few months without looking a mention of Kings Of Leon included. So, if you liked Youth and Young Manhood, then whack this onto your Christmas (download) list.

Rated 4 out of 5

The Bees - Winter's Rose

Recent interviews with the The Bees over modern months has seen the band big up the "psychedelic ayahuasca plant" that they claim has broadened their horizons and is directly responsible for this Simon-&-Garfunkel-stoned-off-their-faces-esque track. Now, we don't condone drug use at all, but we may have to have a rethink after listening to this blissed out small gem.

Winter Rose appears on The Bee's fourth album Every Step's a Yes, and is an indie reggae track (hold on, don't judge it too quickly) that turns it into a hypnotic delight. The brilliance might not be immediate, but give it a few listens and let it intoxicate you.

Rated 4 out of 5

Hurts - All I Want For Christmas Is New Year's Day

Again, this was released last week (what the hell were we doing?) and sees the 1980s Bros-lookalikes release a song that is rammed full of Christmas cliches, but somehow manages to be avoid being fully rubbish.

And if you know your Christmas pop, then you'll know that piano and a snowy video is the key to all things Christmassy. Double tick. However, despite it being a decent attempt at an customary Xmas song (which is very rare) - it can be approximately be lumped into the same file as Westlife or Take That, as it sounds a bit phoney. Are we being a bit too harsh here? Also, why is Robert De Niro (or lookalike) dressed as Santa on the cover? Scary.

Rated 3 out of 5

The Human League - Night People

The Human League's Don't You Want Me has been played to death by Tv advertising, La Roux, small Boots, and probably every artist (slight exaggeration) who has released a song in 2009 and 2010 - due to the great electro renaissance. Therefore it no ifs ands or buts is no surpise that they have decided to make a comeback and charge while the iron is hot! Well, maybe lukewarm, as we are all getting sick of electro and 1980s-inspired keyboarding aren't we?

Yes we are, but despite this no ifs ands or buts sounding like a camp 1980s version of a Kraftwerk song with rubbish lyrics that may make you laugh out loud, it is an Ok tune for those of you who can still stand all this electro nonsense and silly pointless lyrics.

Rated 3 out of 5

Katy B ft. Ms Dynamite - Lights On

Everybody (with the winning combo of working ears and brain) knows that Dubstep is the worst thing that has ever happened in the history of popular music. Fact.

So, here is the girl responsible for making it come out of our radios far too often than it should. Damn her! Katy B (Katie Brien), Peckham's finest musical export, releases a song that continues the commercial brand of Dubstep that approximately makes it bearable to listen to. However, it needs to (dub)step fully away from Dubstep for most of you to get any enjoyment out of this.

Rated 2 out of 5
The most recent Music Download Reviews

Top 12 songs about breakups #3

“By the Time I Get to Phoenix” by Glen Campbell

Songwriter Jimmy Webb found the perfect interpreter for his songs in country singer and session guitarist Glen Campbell. Allegedly written about a girl called Susan, the muse for so many of Webb's songs, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" gave Campbell his first Top 40 hit, in 1967 (and won two Grammys as well). The chorus-less song charts one man's thoughts of how his former lover will respond to his absence as he drives across the country, away from her. Vainly he imagines her crying when she realizes he's really gone, though we never get to find out her real response. It's also worth hearing Isaac Hayes unique version which stretches to nearly 19 minutes and includes an imagined back story for the couple. It's like a soul soap opera.

“Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover” by Paul Simon
While there are countless songs about how someone feels when a relationship is over, there are very few that tell you how to actually go about breaking up with someone. Frustratingly, while the title of Paul Simon's 1975 single "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover" promises the definitive ex-lover's guide, it delivers only a measly five possible options. And of those five, we'd say that only "Slip out the back, Jack" and "Hop on the bus, Gus" are really of any use. We certainly don't recommend "Just drop off the key, Lee" as you don't want to risk bumping into her mother who'll have most certainly gone round there to console her. And "Make a new plan, Stan" doesn't begin to address the complex and often financially crippling consequences of separation. We don't know which option Simon chose when divorcing from first wife Peggy Harper; "Just give her a call, Paul"?

“Idiot Wind” by Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan reacted angrily to suggestions that his song "You're a Big Girl Now" was about the breakup of his first marriage, writing in the sleeve notes to the "Biograph" compilation: "I don't write confessional songs." But what is undeniable is the attitude with which Bob laced the songs on 1974's "Blood on the Tracks" album, from which it was taken, written as his relationship with his wife Sara began to crumble. And it's difficult not to conclude that the man who wrote "Idiot Wind" was consumed with spite. Spitting bile throughout a masterpiece of symbolism, metaphor and poetic imagery with lines as unabashed as: "I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline which separated you from me", Bob concludes with a far more prosaic and resigned declaration: "We're idiots, babe / It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves." She got the mansion, full custody of the kids and a hefty chunk of his fortune, which isn't bad for an "idiot".

“Whole Lotta History” by Girls Aloud
Should Girls Aloud ever tour together again, we imagine this song will take on a new meaning for one band member. Taken from their 2005 concept album "Chemistry," "Whole Lotta History" is known to be a favourite amongst the girls and we don't think we're out of line in saying it's their best ballad, by far. Typical of Xenomania's compositions for the group, there's no conventional verse/chorus structure, with the song unfolding over seven differing musical sections. It's the line: "You cost me so much love / So finally I just decided to go" that's bringing a lump to the throat as we listen to it now.

Top 12 songs about breakups #2

“I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor
Is this the ultimate breakup song? It's impossible to sing the chorus without puffing your chest out and holding your head up defiantly, even if you're happily married. Perhaps surprisingly, "I Will Survive" wasn't inspired by heartbreak but was written for Gloria Gaynor by her producers as a pick-me-up while she spent six months in hospital recovering from a back injury. She was in a back brace when she recorded it, which probably added to the sincerity with which she states her intention to survive (she was happily married at the time). Famously, "I Will Survive" was actually the B-side of her single Substitute. Thankfully, DJs flipped the record over and it went on to win the 1979 Grammy for Best Disco Recording and become an anthem for gay men and downtrodden women everywhere.

“D.I.V.O.R.C.E.” by Tammy Wynette
Despite being best known for singing the feminist-angering "Stand By Your Man," Tammy Wynette had already tackled marital separation, a year earlier with her 1968 single "D-I-V-O-R-C-E." The First Lady of Country's first U.S. number one hit was sung from a wife and mother's point of view, spelling out the words so as not to upset her young children about the impending fate of their family life. Tammy herself had already been married twice (one divorced, one annulled) by the time she recorded the song and would go on to marry a further three times. She sure knew what she was singing about.

“These Boots Are Made For Walkin” by Nancy Sinatra
When the late Lee Hazelwood wrote "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" he intended it as a "joke song" and included it in his own repertoire. But when Frank's daughter Nancy Sinatra heard him sing it, she felt it sounded mean and would be far more "cute" coming from a woman. Lee added a seedy touch to Nancy's 1966 single by instructing her to sing it as if she were a 16-year-old girl ditching a 40-year-old man! The single was a worldwide chart topper just as her recording contract was up for renewal. The resulting bidding war added an extra element to the lyrics' celebration of independent women.

“I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” by Otis Redding
Most breakup songs depict those resigned to their broken heart, some are even resentful, but in reality most relationships end with some undignified pleading from the jilted party. Such an action would be futile unless you possessed the unearthly vocal power of soul legend Otis Redding. Penned by Redding and Jerry Butler, and released in 1965, "I've Been Loving You Too Long" is the sound of a man with nothing left to lose. Literally on his knees, Otis begs his lover not to end the affair, even though he admits: "You are tired and your love is growing cold". The record fades out on the great man repeatedly screaming: "I love you", seemingly in vain.

Top 12 songs about breakups

Heartbreak and heartache suck, sure, but think of all the truly great music they inspire. We've chosen 12 of the best for your consideration.

“Cry Me a River” by Justin Timberlake
In the days before it was commonplace to exploit your celebrity breakup on your own reality TV show, the lack of ambiguity in Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River" was somewhat shocking. We all knew he'd broken up with his girlfriend and fellow Mouseketeer Britney Spears, but despite having never spoken publicly about it, this single from his debut solo album said more than we ever previously imagined about their relationship. "You don't have to say what you did / I already know, I found out from him" sang JT, with most fans concluding this referred to allegations that Britney had been unfaithful with dancer Wade Robson. Justin denied it was about her (despite featuring a Spears lookalike in the video) but Britney was in no doubt and told Rolling Stone: "He got what he wanted. I think it looks like such a desperate attempt, personally."

“She’s Out of My Life” by Michael Jackson
If you can listen to Michael Jackson sing "She's Out of My Life" and not cry like a child watching "Bambi" then you have no heart. It makes the 1980 single even more traumatic when you know it was written by Tom Bahler after he was dumped by none other than Karen Carpenter, following her discovery he had a child with another woman. Intending the song for Frank Sinatra, producer Quincy Jones let Michael record it with some trepidation, knowing the 21-year-old had never experienced the emotions the subject raises. Nevertheless, Jackson broke down in tears with every take, most noticeably on the released version as he sings the final line.

“Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac
If anyone could write the songbook on fractured relationships it's Fleetwood Mac. Taken from "Rumours," the tenth best selling album in U.S. recording history, "Go Your Own Way" is guitarist Lindsay Buckingham's careworn instruction to his bandmate Stevie Nicks, with whom he'd just ended a tempestuous relationship. The tension in the recording studio was added to by the fact that fellow band members John and Christine McVie were also splitting up (it must've been fun there at lunchtime). Buckingham's accusation that "Packing up, shacking up, is all you wanna do" has been denied by Nicks, who told Q magazine: "It was certainly a message within a song. And not a very nice one at that."

“Say Hello Wave Goodbye” by Soft Cell
It's quite astonishing to realise that 80s synth-pop duo Marc Almond and Dave Ball graduated from smearing themselves in cat food and wailing pretentiously about a consumer society to writing a near perfect torch song of failed romance in just two years of forming Soft Cell. Their classic 1981 single finds Marc telling his unnamed, mismatched, prostitute lover of the reasons why their relationship must end (but not the obvious one, curiously enough!) "You were a sleep around / A lost and found / And not for me, I fear", croons Almond in the most earnest of all white soul vocals. Whoever she was, she got dumped in style. Incidentally, never listen to the foolishly re-recorded version from 1991 - it's a travesty.

How to transfer tunes between iPods

Apple locks out your ability to move your iPod’s music to any other place. They of course allow you to purchase and download music from iTunes to your computer, and then move it to an iPod (or as many iPods as you care to buy). Apple’s goal: keep the artists who made the music happy by making it hard for you to illegally give away or sell music you bought for your own use.

So the answer to your question depends partly on your morals, and partly on the kind of music you bought. But if you want to put your iPod-based music on another person’s iPod, well… yes, you could, but you would almost certainly be violating the copyright of the artist who created the song and sold it to you under the assumption you’d be the only one using it.

That said, here are some legal or at least morally upright solutions to nightmare scenarios (I invite all visitors to submit their own, LEGAL suggestions):

1) Nightmare: Your computer dies with all your legally-purchased songs on it. You have your music backed up on your iPod, but now you have no way to connect your iPod’s music to a new computer you buy, without erasing your old iPod’s music (Apple forces that step). SOLUTION: MacWorld’s editor-at-large John Dalrymple likes Podworks software. For 8 bucks, and, without stripping the music of its legal DRM protection, Podworks lets you move the library on your iPod to your new computer.

2) Nightmare: You have tons of DRM-protected songs from iTunes. You have kids. They want your music. Bad, right? You either “steal” the music and give it to them (although some would understandably say you should be able to include them in your license); or you tell them they have to buy their own songs. SOLUTION: Apple now sells non-DRM-protected music. You can upgrade any or all DRM-protected songs in your library to non-DRM songs for .30 each and transfer those newly-liberated songs to your kids’ iPod, Zune, Creative Zen, or whatever they own.

And yes, there are other, quasi-legal software remedies out there for sharing (its initials are “Requiem”) that I’ve heard of but do not endorse, but you’re on your own there.

Singing sensation Susan Boyle gets makeover [2]

Max Clifford, Britain most publicist, said makeover is risky because it could jeopardize her emotional connection with her audience.

"Keep it as natural, as far as possible for as long as possible," was his advice. "This is more than on the protection of the promotion. She got to vote. It must ensure that those people all over the world love remains unchanged."

Discussion crossed the Atlantic Ocean, in The Washington Post fashion writer Robin Givhan calling Boyle print to take this opportunity to transform her appearance.

"The Tale of Susan Boyle will not be finalized until the shy virgin flowers", Givhan wrote before the makeover. "Those who were entranced her story so far should enable Boyle in fairy godmother to finish its work."

But warned that Givhan Boyle counterfeiting can be a success: "Boyle is not mesmerizing, if not ugly duckling," she wrote.

Londoners seem to be split over the new look.

Dean Elliott, a young drama student in London, said Boyle lost what made it special by altering its appearance.

"Part of the charm is that it is not done," he said.

But Helen Gledhill, a photographer in London, said that she understood the decision and Boyle might have done the same if it was in the same position.

"If I had a little more money, and was exposed, I might do something too," said Gledhill.

She said that talent is often more important than looks and physical attractiveness is a sad commentary on modern society, accusing Madonna wholesale change in attitudes.

"Before Madonna, you just had to have talent," she said. "Now the whole package."

The success of the mini-makeover may depend on how much progress Boyle on "Britain's Got Talent." The judge will decide on May 23 that it gets to the next round.

Singing sensation Susan Boyle gets makeover [1]

LONDON - The economy is terrible, disappearing jobs, and taxes are going up. But Britain buzzing over something else - Susan Boyle, a new hairdo.

Some say that on the night singing sensation, who has to glory after a phenomenal performance on "Britain's Got talent" has every right to raise her dowdy appearance. Others fear it could lose its authenticity - and its surprising connection to a television audience - if it goes too far in the image makeover department.

This change is startling. Gone is the stale woman with greying, curly hair and jowly face, who joked on air that she had never kissed, replace stylish, freshly coiffed lady in a fashionable leather jacket and what looks like a Burberry scarf. In the dark, unkempt eyebrows were shapes and colors.

Fashion experts say it has taken years to leave her looks, but should think twice about more improvements, especially if they go beyond the styling and involve artificial accessories.

"She looks younger than 10 years," said Tony Jones, associate editor of fashion in the tabloid Sun, which dealt a fresh look Boyle for Friday.

"Compared to what it is 200 per cent increase. But our readers, I think that is how it should go. We want it to remain one of us."

John Boyle said the decision to paint the hair brown to some confusion among the authorities, it would be "Britain's Got talent" fueling fears that it may no longer seems real.

"This was a massive impact on its people, because they want it above her look normal," said Jones, who praised Boyle spent 35 pounds in the cabin near his home in Scotland, instead of trips to London for 200 pounds reduced by celebrity salon.

Jones said she was amazed at the interest in Boyle, the new do, and warned the singer against going too far by adding, for example, hair extensions and fake tan was in England, as pampered wives and girlfriends of Great Britain's elite professional athletes are known.

Gossip Girl star signs record deal

Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester has signed a contract with Universal Republic.

Billboard.com has learned that the record company, Universal Republic, sealed a deal with Leighton Meester, best known for her role as Blair Waldorf in the television series Gossip Girl.

The 23-year-old actress has already begun working in the studio to record material that's been described as electro-pop.

For the project with a fall deadline, Meester teamed with producers Polow Da Don (Usher, Fergie), Harvey Mason Jr. (Justin Timberlake, Pink) and Spencer Nezey (Jupiter Rising).

"I'm thrilled to be welcomed into the Universal Republic fold. The test is done only in healthy people, and there is an upper limit on the time they keep their hands in the cold bath.

"We are looking for whether the music will have an impact on human tolerance of pain - how long they can tolerate a painful stimulus, and will reduce the actual sense, the actual perception of pain for them and whether this will lead to a reduction in anxiety human pain and whether it helps them feel a little bit to control the pain they are experiencing, "she said.

People have reported their ability to distract themselves from pain, two times more than if they were to listen to your favorite music, and their perception of worth more than they think, fell significantly.

Mitchell, who studies the art of governance and for eight years, believes that the emotional associations, which have reduced music to human perception of pain.

"This is a distraction from the music that you love, and you have a relationship with. And you're so emotionally tied to it, you're so emotionally involved that it can actually take the pain away," she said.

continued on next post

Music Guide Feb 2009

Calle 13
"Los de Atras Vienen Conmigo"
(Norte)
Grade: B+

You don't have to speak Spanish to conclude that this arty, political San Juan rap duo deserve their rocketing reputation -- I sure can't, though when I squint at the booklet my puny recognition vocabulary helps. But you do have to immerse and concentrate -- and accept that you'll miss most of what's going on even then. They're reggaeton only by association, a lot further from Daddy Yankee's hey-mami dancehall than the Roots were from Dr. Dre's jeep-pimping funk. By all accounts and the little I can work out, their lyrics are playfully associative and outrageously filthy. But for gringos, their humor resides almost entirely in Visitante's out-there arrangements and Residente's overt vocal comedy, as on the Balkanized "Fiesta de Locos." If some promotional visionary were to provide trots, that might change. But as it is, big guests Café Tacuba and Ruben Blades are too mainstream to launch Calle's 2008 model into the surrealist stratosphere.

Calle 13
"Residente o Visitante"
(Norte)
Grade: A-

Start here, partly to benefit from the online discussion this album has inspired over two years -- cf. allthelyrics.com's takeout on the Rabelaisian "Uiyi Guaye" -- but mostly to delve into sardonic sonics that hint at what Tom Zé might have gone for if he'd come up on OutKast and Eminem instead of the Beatles and the Stones. From mock-operatic intro to mock-rock finale, the music is disruptive fun throughout. Latin-flavored yet light on salsa clavé and reggaeton dembow, it sharpens the lyrics so that sometimes a single word can make you nod or smile while its context remains a mystery.

Glasvegas
"Glasvegas"
(Columbia)
Grade: A

Not a brother band -- a cousin band, possibly inbred. For sure there's something hillbilly insular about their ties to Glasgow's Dalmarnock hood. But like Dolly Parton bringing her mountain home to Nashville, they churn out big, corny, mass-appeal heart songs, with subjects including knife fights, fatherless children, and -- really -- how your social worker won't let you down. Where you'd think ex-footballer James Allan would propel this material with Mick Hucknall soul or maybe Proclaimers purism, his musical ideal is elegiac Jesus and Mary Chain noise-punk, which cleansed of the Reid brothers' junkie dissolution approaches Righteous Brothers grandeur. Innocent and confident, this is one of those bands that could fall on its face or take over the world. They're too good to be true and plain as the nose on your face.

Guns N' Roses
"Chinese Democracy"
(Geffen)
Grade: B+

Hopeless eccentric spends most of his adult life and a large chunk of his ill-gotten fortune trying to make the perfect album. Succeeds, kind of, on his own totally irrelevant terms. Nobody cares. Since he's no longer capable of leading young white males astray, this effort isn't just pleasurable artistically. It's touching on a human level. Noble, even. I didn't think he had it in him.

ABBA tribute band says it played for Putin

MOSCOW (AP) - British based ABBA tribute band said on Friday the Kremlin quickly away to perform a private concert for Vladimir Putin - offering rare insight into the private life of secretive prime minister of Russia.

Four members of Bjorn Again, the band said that traveled 200 miles (320 kilometers) north of Moscow on January 22 concert by the Lake Valday perform before an exclusive audience of eight people - Putin unidentified blonde woman and six other men in tuxedoes.

Putin representative denied that the Prime Minister attended any concert, but group members have sufficient information and stated that they recognized Putin shows.

ABBA is one of the most loved foreign bands in the Soviet times, and the Swedish quartet, even traveled to Moscow to serve in the Kremlin.

But the revelation that Putin may be a closet ABBA fans run counter to its traditional strong image. The Prime Minister is better known for the courageous display of judo mat and jet fighter cockpits, as well as for reliable outbursts against the West.

Rod Steven, the founder of Bjorn Again, at first it was a hoax when he received a phone call requesting that his team travel to Russia to perform at the Lake Valdai.

"It was a classic" Hello ... The Kremlin ... Russia ... we want to Bjorn Again "," Stephen recalled. "I thought he was one of the group by sending me."

But they soon realized it was serious.

Aileen McLaughlin, one of four team members who traveled to Russia, said the group found the whole experience "strange" since the beginning. After flying to Moscow, they boarded a bus for nine hours journey from "very bad" Roads and learned they had to perform before Putin.

"We arrived at five in the morning at the large metal security gate, where we had to go and looking for", she said by telephone from London. "We are just tired and want to get to the hotel. And my - we were wrong again!"

McLaughlin said that they were in places like military installations, with the most basic accommodation and tight security. Panel members are protected by machine gun-toting, and protecting cells, and when any of them have ventured on the street, they were prevented from moving away to men with Kalishnikovs.

But she said that the audience - seated comfortably on a sofa, three - appeared to enjoy the concert.

"They were clapping and swaying, and make their fingers in the air, this kind of thing," said McLaughlin. "He (Putin) was a good rhythm. He was shouting 'Bravo, Bravo!" After the song. "

The audience especially enjoyed "Great Actor" and "Mamma Mia", she added.

Lace curtain separated the band from the elite audience for the hour, high-security show, but McLaughlin said at one point Spotlight flashed from the audience and the band members saw Putin.

McLaughlin described the woman as a lonely blonde, who was "wearing long, cream, really pretty dress." Putin's wife, Lyudmila, has blonde hair, but they are rarely seen together anymore.

The band was paid 20,000 pounds ($ 30000) for their work, which was organized in Moscow on the basis of agents SAV Entertainment, said Steven, speaking in London.

The woman at the SAV Entertainment denied that anything to do with this event.

"We are told that each concert and did not take place. We deny it," she said, refusing to give her name.

The representative of Putin, Dmitry Peskov denied that Putin has taken part of any such party, or about 22 January, adding "Neither Putin nor his office has ordered a band of this kind."

"I have no doubt that he loves the music of Abba," said Peskov. "But it just was not there."

Guns 'n' Roses – Chinese Democracy :review

by Kerry Gold
Rating: 4/5

Download: Better, There Was a Time, Catcher In the Rye, Scraped

For all the talk around this album, for the 15 or so years it's taken for Axl Rose to get it together to nail down these 14 tracks, you'd think he'd torn up the rock ‘n' roll blueprint and rewritten it.

It turns out, of course, that he hasn't, but the result is mercifully kind to Rose, who went through what has to be one of the most perfectionist-driven creative rolls to make a record that will beat out any self-torture even Lucinda Williams might have inflicted upon herself. Dudes will rejoice for the preposterously big and pretentiously guitar-fuelled sound that dominates this release, with featured rolls for the likes of Brian May for intensely wiry licks and soft rock atmosphere of Catcher In the Rye (a great, bust-the-roof-off song). He does better on Better, with its skittering beats and beefy hooks. There Was a Time opens with a children's choir then slides into Rose's serviceable rock vocal for a and anvil-heavy guitar chords, making for one of the more interesting songs. And then Scraped is a fascinating rock-god tribute to weirdness that is what heavy hitting rock is all about – eccentricity. And Rose possesses it in spades.

Akon - Freedom :review

by Kerry Gold
Rating: 3/5

Download: Sunny Day, Beautiful

Who would have thought multi-platinum raunchy urban artist Akon would be such a mushball, but here he is waxing romantic on the majority of these 13 tracks, featuring guests artists like T-Pain, Lil Wayne and Wyclef.

And he does it with considerable believability and ease, despite the sly-dog persona. Sunny Day duet with Wyclef is easy, laid back and all sunny rhythm, subtle rhymes, and built around Akon's enhanced vocal and a waxy beat and plasticized synths. There's an upbeat boldness to this record, with its clean sound and heat-seeking missiles aimed straight at making Akon the killer lady's man he professes to be. Sure, there's the streetwise sound of I'm So Paid, but mostly this guy is on the hook for love — and even if it is all an act, he delivers it with such deliberate urgency, it's all forgivable, and thoroughly enjoyable, too.

The Hook: Year in Review, 2008 Edition

Four seasons, 52 weeks and 60 episodes later I am back with my thoughts and comments about how the last year of my life went. I am assuming if you are reading this that you have taken a real interest in The Hook and I would like first and foremost like to thank you for all your support. It is truly amazing to know that people appreciate what I do; even those that I may never get a chance meet face to face. Without you I would not get to do what I love to do, so thank you very much.

2008 was great, but flew by faster than a dragonfly. Before I knew it, it was time for another “Year In Review”. I felt like the level of artists for this year had stepped up. I interviewed some A-list artists such as Pink, Sheryl Crow, Nickelback, Leona Lewis, Spice Girls and my favorite the almighty Al Green himself. I also was able to step outside the world of Pop Music and learn about South Asia’s Bollywood industry and even the Canadian Country Music scene.

Although, with the increase in the number of interviews compared to 2007, I was definitely much busier this year. I recall doing something like 5 interviews in 6 days one week; not to mention events such as the Juno’s or the Celebrity Gala where I had more interviews by the hour than Robert Downy Jr. has had DUI charges. Yes, there were definitely times where I hated the sound of my own voice, but that just comes with the territory.

Though I would never trade my show for anything less than a prepaid summer home off the coast of the Maldives, I have realized that I am in need of help for 2009 if I want to step it up a notch. No one man is an island and the answer is an assistant a.k.a. my own personal slave.

It was initially a recommendation by a friend, although the more I pondered I started to envision just how grand that would be. Really, imagine it for just a moment. I would never again have to put on my own Lav, press my own espresso, pick up my own clothes or even brush my own teeth again. I am thinking along the lines of P. Diddy’s Fonzworth Bentley, who was a bravura exemplar of support. I would agree that the umbrella carrying was a bit overboard but I am not certain if that is simply my ego or my scruples talking. Either way I can guarantee you that as my assistant you will not be required to help me shield my skin from the sun; however, I will not decline the offer if it arises…hahah!

No, really, on a serious note, given all my new projects in 2009 (The Hook, OTB and Morning Electric) it is just the next step in evolution so I have decided to launch my own search. I am not sure what to call it yet, but it will definitely be open to the public and the only requirement is your own umbrella. Just kidding!

There are no requirements, except an earnest curiosity for journalism. So, let the games begin…See you in 2009

Kanye West – 808s & Heartbreak :review

Download: Say You Will, Heartless

As the title suggests, Kanye West's heart is clearly broken these days, and for the most part, it suits him well. A couple of these tracks are stunning testimonies to loss and betrayal. Out of the box, he sets the tone with an edgy, stark sonic atmosphere that is less about hip hop than moody pop. West is hurt, angry and intent on clarity on 808s & Heartbreak. "How could you be so heartless?" he asks, on the track of the same name. He distances himself only through the use of a vocoder, or electronic voice effects, which give the album a robotic, synthesized quality that suits the organic piano, strings and percussion. But West's grief is real and pointed. The mission is to focus on the lyrics, because West has a message to send, and it's for his ex-fiancée and in a couple of instances, his deceased, beloved mother ("My face turned to stone when I heard the news," he sings on Bad News). Nothing here is overt enough to wallop you over the head with hooks and rhymes. It might take a few listens for the nuanced material to sink in, and give it a chance and it will. Say You Will is a haunting ballad filled with electro beeps and stark percussion. Robocop is a mini symphony of lush strings and soundtrack drama, on which West finally releases his humorous side, comparing his ex to "that girl from Misery." But it's a dark album, so there is little relief from his sorrow, and musically, the simple riffs and somber electronics reflect that. The release isn't going to the holiday pick-up you might expect — it's a study in darkness, with moments of dirge-like but honest beauty.

Brandy – Human :review

Download: Long Distance, Camouflage

The former teenage phenomenon that was Brandy is finding a hard time finding her footing as an adult performer these days, what with artists like Rihanna, Beyonce and Alicia Keys so admirably holding onto the chart numbers. The once platinum-selling Brandy (Never Say Never, The Boy Is Mine, a TV show called Moesha), is less marketable now that she's become tabloid fodder due to a messy divorce and car accident — never mind the fact that it's been about four years since she released an album. There's little here to get fans juiced up about a comeback, save for a well-orchestrated and big-sounding ballad called Long Distance, on which her mature, slightly husky voice has clearly become a more powerful and emotive instrument. A close second is Camouflage, an easy listening little tune built upon a soft beat, clangy keyboard and the standard-issue synth. Elsewhere, the sound is a tad too predictable, a little rote, as if Brandy hasn't been getting out much these days and hasn't kept up with the latest club sounds that have made her genre-sisters such in-demand superstars. She's reunited with producer Darkchild, but the squiggly, old-sounding synth is overwrought and almost noisy when it starts to swallow up Brandy's vocals on the mostly tepid buffet of tunes offered here.

The top singers forever

1) Tose Proeski

“. . most beautiful voice, most beautiful eyes, most beautiful look, most beautiful angel = TOSE PROESKI. . . The clef you will see on your music depends on what instrument you play.

Treble Clef

Bass Clef

You might wonder why there are 2 different clefs. The reason is that most instruments using the bass clef usually have a lower pitch (sound) and regulary play low notes. If they were to use the treble clef the notes would appear so far below the staff it would be hard to read. Here are the the names of the notes for both clefs. Although you only really need to know 1 or the other, it is good practice to know both.

Love Musics

"ALONE AND BLUE" - Written by Steve Gray, Courtesy of Associated Production Music LLC
"ONE MINT JULEP (CHA-CHA TWIST)" - Written by Rudolph Toombs, Performed by Xavier Cugat, Courtesy of The Island Def Jam Music Group under license from Universal Music Enterprises
"DOWN WITH LOVE" - Written by Harold Arlen and E.Y.
