Is Image Important in Dancing?

Image is an important part of the dance industry. Jobs can be won on image alone. The ' right ' images can get work again and again and be offered lucrative contracts. In some ways it can be very similar to the modelling industry, the difference of course is that there needs to be some dancing talent to go along with that image.

Spending some effort to get your image right is worthwhile. Many times dancers aren't successful because they just don't have the right image for the industry. Unfortunately some looks just aren't frequently needed. This includes Goths, punks and entirely second-hand wardrobe looks.

Many people are very stubborn when it comes to image and this is understandable because your image is part of your public persona. Some people would consider theirimage and presentation to be a part of their identity.

Image is not solely about looks or how naturally pretty you are. Just as fashion isn't about how beautiful you are. It's about having an image that is buyable.

When there are jobs for dancers in music videos and on television they will often be paid well into the thousands. The client will want to get what they want. Essentially when they are hiring dancers they are ' buying ' each dancer's image and dancing skills for the project.

The thing is there are a number of different image types that can be successful in the music video industry (assuming your dancing ability is up to scratch). You just need to catch on to which images will and won't work.

There are definitely certain image types that clients will go foragain and again. If you go to lots of dance auditions you should be able to figure this out before long. Of course there are variations to the preferred dancer looks depending on the type of job involved. Some people will just pay no attention to this and carry on with an image that doesn't work.

Having the right image is kind of like ' dressing for the part. ' A businessman needs a suit, even if they prefer to dress in jeans and t-shirt. When you go to auditions you are presenting yourself for work ...

Catch onto the trends and see what's working at the moment. It's not rocket science and you don't need to start dressing exactly like other dancers. See how the top dancers dress; is there anything they have in common with one another?
